The Lost Episodes! Instagram Highlights.

How Do All ;-)

Its been such a fantastic year so far that I have been too busy having fun on bikes to bother updating the Awesome goings on here!
So here are a few of the best bits from this years Instagram posts, the rest you can catch up with on my Instagram Feed.

I went for a spin out to Burnham Beeches today to try and get rid of the misery face ☹️ and enjoy some nature after yesterday's pollution fest in London! Wearing my new favourite cap, and that's not because it has naughty swear words on it ๐Ÿ˜‡ I pass this beautiful church in Datchet quite often and it's stark white limestone? spire stands out for miles around like a beacon. The contrast of the blue sky and dark blue, sapphire like clock face really draw in the eye. It's also so nice to have such a beautiful wooded area like Burnham Beeches to go and chill out in on the bike, a complete opposite to the city of London. Ah! Misery face temporarily gone ๐Ÿ˜ #knottybear #laidbackcyclist #cycling #design #bicycle #miserylovescompany #porteurbike #kingfisher #burnhambeeches #beautifulplaces #londoncycling #londonbikekitchen #fixshit #cyclingcap #architecture #churchspire #church #ifyougodowntothewoodstoday #porteurbike

I took the Kingfisher for a 30 mile test ride on the way home from work via Burnham Beeches to try out the new rack properly, and also give the Rat Trap Pass tyres a good run now that I have set them up tubeless. The rack is fairly simple in design but perfect for my needs and not over or under built, loaded the bike feels great and the steering feels normal and not at all unstable even cornering at speed. Riding through the Beeches over roots and dead branches, and on the rough roads everything is sound with no movement, so i am completely chuffed with my first efforts at rack building. I have the tyres running at 35psi in the rear and 30psi in the front, this seems about right with the load up front, and I am impressed with the comfort and overall handling on and off road. I was quite surprised to see my speed is still quite good considering this is basically a glorified shopping bike ๐Ÿ˜‚ I will finish the rear rack and lights in the next week or so, but for now I just want to enjoy riding. #framebuilding #filletbrazing #knottybear #laidbackcyclist #cycling #brazing #fabrication #design #bicycle #steelisreal #stainlesssteel #neverstoplearning #porteurbike #kingfisher #bicyclerack #compassrattrappass #rodivision #trpspyre #porteurrack #burnhambeeches #beautifulplaces #ifyougodowntothewoodstoday #tubeless #stansnotubes #porteurbike

I took the Kingfisher to work today so I could try out the Porteur rack I have just made, I have not made the porteur bag yet but luckily one of my panniers fit just fine laying down and clipped on nicely. I had 7 kilos on the rack and it handled that ok and the steering was also fine. I still need to add the light mounts at some point and may need to adjust the fore/aft position of the rack but for now it is fully useable and I am happy, for five minutes at least ๐Ÿ˜‚ I really enjoyed brazing this rack and the fillet brazing lessons learned at @thebicycleacademy made it all that more enjoyable as I had a good idea of what I was doing, thank you! I still have the rear rack to make and then I will take some proper pictures of the finished bike. It's so awesome being able ride something I made, and being able to furnish it with racks that I made also just make it that much more exciting! #framebuilding #filletbrazing #knottybear #laidbackcyclist #cycling #brazing #fabrication #design #bicycle #steelisreal #stainlesssteel #neverstoplearning #porteurbike #kingfisher #bicyclerack #compassrattrappass #rodivision #trpspyre #porteurrack

Active Recovery Ride! Well more probably recovery hindrance ride ๐Ÿ˜‹ I am still having trouble with the ankle which is now proven to be tendonitis and not some mystery infection from the zombie flesh eating wood ants ๐Ÿœ, but I just cant rest, I need the ride to keep away the evil inside, that is cabin fever! My name is Barry, I am a recovering cycloholic. It has been 20 minutes since my last ride.... etcetera, etcetera. Gaia 2.0 nestled in an Amazon Wood Ants nest with a beautiful hollowed out tree as a back drop. Burnham Beeches is a truly beautiful place to visit by bike ๐Ÿ˜Š #stansnotubes #tubeless #gaia2 #gaia #laidbackcyclist #recumbent #recumbentbike #ligfiets #liegerad #velocouche #knottybear #testing #bicycle #cycling #londoncycling #laidbacklondon #mavic #schwalbekojak #schwalbe #notubes #beautifulplaces #burnhambeeches #ifyougodowntothewoodstoday #performer_recumbents #tree #englishheritage

The art of camouflage and concealment! Believe it or not, there is a bicycle in this picture! Yes really! If you look very closely you can just about make out the faint outline of my bike, no, I'm not pulling you leg, it's really there, right in front of the Sydney Opera House ๐Ÿ˜‹ After convalescing with my poorly ankle and riding alternative bike types (luckily I have a very varied taste in bikes ๐Ÿ˜) I decided to try the recumbent again and had a little ride out to Greenwich, Woolwich and Stratford, the ankle seems to have done ok and I hope it was just a minor hiccup after abusing myself on my after work rides! I had a great ride and also met Simon and Chris, two cyclists on the Woolwich ferry, whom I then took on a magical mystery tour to, and along the Greenway to the Olympic park. It was great to meet you both and I really enjoyed the company, thank you. #gaia2 #gaia #laidbackcyclist #recumbent #recumbentbike #ligfiets #liegerad #velocouche #knottybear #bicycle #cycling #londoncycling #laidbacklondon #performer_recumbents #activerecovery #camoflaugeandconcealment #camouflage #thamesbarrier #thecolourgreen #ifyournotridingyournotliving #bikebuddies

December Instagram Highlights!

How Do All ;-)
Here are some highlights from the past few weeks events.
Please check out the rest of the pictures Here:
Illegally parked (again) below a British Airways Concord, this is the closest I have ever been to an actual Concord, I used to love watching them take off every morning, from the roof of the hotel I used to be a maintenance engineer at in Longford. I somehow, and quite innocently managed to illegally gain access to the Brooklands Museum on my bike! And without paying! Thank you Garmin it was very nice to be here ๐Ÿ‘ What an awesome place! I did however have to negotiate my release from the site and they seemed a bit funny about me taking my bike through the museum shop/entrance ๐Ÿ˜‚ Maybe someday I will go back for an official visit, paid for of course ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ˜‰ #gaia #gaia2 #laidbackcyclist #knottybear #laidbacklondon #cycling #bicycle #cycletouring #teaandcake #recumbent #recumbentbike #ligfiets #liegerad #velocouche #cyclinglife #longrides #englishheritage #history #brooklands #brooklandsmuseum #architecture #beautifulplaces #thegreatescape #evadingcapture #stealthbike #concord #remeniscing #britishairways

Well, it's starting to look more like a bike now! Trial fitting the wheels with the Compass, Rat Trap Pass tyres to the frame and forks I built @thebicycleacademy It's the first time I've seen the frame and forks together with wheels and looking bike like! I still need to clean all the flux from the frame and tickle a couple of patches with a file before painting but all the fillet brazing is going to be otherwise left as is, from the torch. I can't wait to get her painted and built up in the new year, though I still need to fabricate the racks once I buy my own torch set. #compassrattrappass #framebuilding #thebicycleacademy #learning #doing #filletbrazing #knottybear #laidbackcyclist #cycling #brazing #fabrication #design #bicycle #steelisreal #newbeginings #neverstoplearning #therightpath #portuerbike

Here is a quick 360 of the Calleva Atrebatum Roman Amphitheatre in Silchester. The walls would have been much higher as would the banking which supported the wooden seating. Went on another 81 mile round trip today, the distance was just coincidental! This time out to Silchester to visit the Roman ruins of the city walls, and the The Calleva Atrebatum Roman Amphitheatre I rode through dense mist and fog for 90% of the day but luckily Silchester and Pamber Heath were clear when I got there, even got some sunshine in Tadley where I stopped for tea. #gaia #gaia2 #laidbackcyclist #knottybear #laidbacklondon #cycling #bicycle #cycletouring #teaandcake #recumbent #recumbentbike #ligfiets #liegerad #velocouche #cyclinglife #longrides #Silchester #romanruins #amphitheatre #englishheritage #history

Some Autumnal Instagram Highlights.

How Do All ;-)
Here are some highlights from the past few weeks events.
Please check out the rest of the pictures Here:

Testing! Testing! Again! ๐Ÿ˜‹ After giving the Michelin Wild Run'r tyres a fair go last week, I found them to be too slow for my liking, upto 20mph they were ok but over that and trying to cruise along at 30mph was a real struggle compared to my Durano's. So after much searching for a larger tyre that would fit between my narrow 46mm seat stays I have had to go for the Schwalbe Kojak's. I would have liked to give the Compass Naches Pass a go but at 44mm they would have probably caused problems ๐Ÿ˜ฟ The Kojak's are supposed to be 35mm but they measure up at an actual size of 32x32mm which is rather disappointing as the Michelin sized also at 35mm came in at 36x36mm. A problem I came across with the Kojak's was that I could not inflate them onto the rim with the largest volume track pump I have, so being inventive I came up with a home brew, air shot tubeless inflator, I had an old pressure vessel from my old works, and some spare fittings from my composites vacuum set up. I pumped this up to 90psi and opened the valve, and ๐Ÿ’จ pop! The tyre was on and up. Well that saved me £50.00 for a shop bought air shot bottle ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ˜‹ The two kojak tyres I bought seem to be from different batches also, as the side walls of one are clearly thicker that the other, and the thinner one is porous, this took a while to seal up properly but the Stan's liquid has done a great job of making the tyre airtight. Fingers crossed these Kojak's are as easy rolling as my Durano's or more so, and hopefully more or less as comfortable as the Michelin's were. Roll on the weekend for a test ride! #stansnotubes #tubeless #gaia2 #gaia #laidbackcyclist #recumbent #recumbentbike #ligfiets #liegerad #velocouche #knottybear #testing #bicycle #cycling #londoncycling #laidbacklondon #mavic #schwalbekojak #schwalbe #notubes #airshot

Testing! A pre-work de-stress ride, and chance to try the Schwalbe Kojak's I set up tubeless last night. Running at 55psi they roll extremely well, and the difference between the Michelin Wild Run'r tyres is very noticeable! Though the Kojak's are a smaller volume tyre, they still have that cushioning I was after, and even on wet leaves and twig covered ground I was not the slightest bit bothered about slipping or being deflected off course as I would have been on the high pressures I ran the Durano's at. All in all a very successful morning and I hope to do more testing this weekend to see how they handle as I get more confidence throwing them hard into corners and the like, I just hope they don't blow off the rims ๐Ÿ˜‚ #stansnotubes #tubeless #gaia2 #gaia #laidbackcyclist #recumbent #recumbentbike #ligfiets #liegerad #velocouche #knottybear #testing #bicycle #cycling #londoncycling #laidbacklondon #mavic #schwalbekojak #schwalbe #notubes #airshot #beautifulplaces #burnhambeeches #ifyougodowntothewoodstoday #autumn

More Testing! A nice ride into town with @britswed to give the tubeless Schwalbe Kojak's a proper run out. Now running at 60psi, mainly due to the porosity of the front tyre, to allow a little loss of pressure during the ride without getting squishy, and until it fully seals itself. The difference between 55psi and 60psi is pretty much unnoticeable so will probably stick to 55psi in future as any higher will only make for a harder ride, possibly less road grip, and no gains in speed, only a feeling of speed as you get rattled down the road! I'm really enjoying the softer ride, and with a headache all day it has really helped๐Ÿ‘ #stansnotubes #tubeless #gaia2 #gaia #laidbackcyclist #recumbent #recumbentbike #ligfiets #liegerad #velocouche #knottybear #testing #bicycle #cycling #londoncycling #laidbacklondon #mavic #schwalbekojak #schwalbe #notubes #airshot #beautifulplaces #thamesbarrier #river #london #autumn #riverthames

An Amazing Two Weeks, Instagram Highlights!

I had an amazing two weeks in Frome, Studying at The Bicycle Academy.
Not only did I design and build my very own frame and forks, I saw some great sights on my rides in the countryside around Frome.

You can see all the pictures on my Instagram page here:

It was a good day today! I brazed the rear dropouts into the chainstays, mitred the chainstay's to the bottom bracket, which was a very satisfying job, breather holes drilled in bottom bracket. Then the seat stays were bent as they needed more clearance for my choice of tyre, then the ends cut and notched to the rear dropouts, the last mitre's were cut for the seat stay to seat tube interface and breather holes drilled. The drive side chain stay still needs dimpling for tyre clearance and notching for chainring clearance. All this followed by more brazing practice, there really aren't enough hours in the day! Paul's teaching and advice today was invaluable! Thank you! ๐Ÿ‘ Tomorrow I hope to get the frame all fillet brazed and possibly start the fork. I am thus far very happy with my progress! ๐Ÿ˜‹ Thanks to @thebicycleacademy @ndrwdnhm @86customs @tedjamesdesign @sturdycycles @academytools @btr_fabrications and Dorota for all your help so far, it is mind blowingly awesome to be on this journey with such cool people and feel like part of the family. #framebuilding #thebicycleacademy #learning #doing #theresnoplacelikefrome #knottybear #laidbackcyclist #cycling #brazing #fabrication #design #awesomepeople #family #beautifulplaces #bicycle #steelisreal #newbeginings #neverstoplearning #therightpath #portuerbike

I now have my basic frame all fillet brazed, and with anxiety levels running at 11 it was a stressful but very enjoyable learning process. Paul only beat me once during the brazing, but he does get the best out of you. I am extremely happy with the quality of my first fillets and intend to leave them as they are "warts and all" so I have something to judge my future work by. It was very nice to have Jake Rusby in house watching over the process, he is a very talented builder a great help too, thank you! I still need to add the rear stay bridges and all the braze on's and some other bits of fluff, hopefully the extra top tube and weeks and weeks of work to do ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks to @thebicycleacademy @ndrwdnhm @86customs @rusbycycles @tedjamesdesign @sturdycycles @academytools @btr_fabrications and Dorota for all your help so far, it is mind blowingly awesome to be on this journey with such cool people and feel like part of the family. #framebuilding #thebicycleacademy #learning #doing #filletbrazing #theresnoplacelikefrome #knottybear #laidbackcyclist #cycling #brazing #fabrication #design #awesomepeople #family #beautifulplaces #bicycle #steelisreal #newbeginings #neverstoplearning #therightpath #portuerbike

How Do All ๐Ÿ˜‰ Today was sadly my last day at The Bicycle Academy ๐Ÿ˜ฟ and here is my finished, hand made, custom frame and forks for my Porteur style bike with double top tubes. And it was all finished, "just by the skin of my* teeth" at 17:30 this evening. It all looks rather messy and cooked at the moment but once cleaned up and flux free it should look much nicer. I got quite emotional on the ride back to the hotel as it was all over quite suddenly and there was no time to stand back and enjoy the fruits of my labour before having to leave, well it was Friday and people do have homes to go to ๐Ÿ˜Š as I was not able to take the frame and forks with me due to being on the train I will have to wait until I am reunited with them before I can really enjoy them. To get this far in just ten days from virtually nothing, I feel was a real achievement! I have to say a very special thank you to *Paul Burford @86customs for going the extra mile for me in the final push to get the bike done on time, by mitering the second top tube and shaping the front disc mount so I could concentrate on building the fork and then brazing the parts in. And also for shaping and TIG welding the double chainstay cut outs which make it possible for me to run my large tyre /crankset combination, he is a true craftsman and it was a joy to watch him work! Thank You Paul ๐Ÿ˜˜ Thank You to @thebicycleacademy @ndrwdnhm @86customs @rusbycycles @tedjamesdesign @sturdycycles @academytools @btr_fabrications and Dorota for all your help, it was mind blowingly awesome to be on this journey with such cool people and feel like part of the family. You have provided me with the tools I need to continue forwards with meaningful practice, and hopefully a future in Frame Building, not to mention an awesome new bicycle to ride ๐Ÿ˜˜ #framebuilding #thebicycleacademy #learning #doing #filletbrazing #theresnoplacelikefrome #knottybear #laidbackcyclist #cycling #brazing #fabrication #design #awesomepeople #family #beautifulplaces #bicycle #steelisreal #newbeginings #neverstoplearning #therightpath #portuerbike
